Welcome to the Written Corpus of Utah Dual Language Immersion (CUDLI) 

The Corpus of Utah Dual Language Immersion (CUDLI) is being developed by researchers at the University of Utah’s Second Language Teaching and Research Center. CUDLI is a multilingual corpus of second language writing. Texts in CUDLI come from 3rd through 12th grade responses to the presentational writing portion of the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL), administered in Utah's Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. CUDLI comprises almost 150,000 written texts (approx. 15 million words) in 5 languages (Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish). It is searchable by many factors, i.e., language, gender, grade level, type of immersion, years of study, test form, topic, and student's proficiency ratings in all sections of the AAPPL test (speaking, writing, reading, and listening).

CUDLI can be used by teachers, researchers, and material developers for a multitude of pedagogical purposes, such as detecting learners’ challenges and comparing their performance across proficiency levels, identifying learners’ common errors, analyzing learners’ vocabulary use, and developing data-driven materials, to name a few.

We are grateful to the Language Resource Center for funding this project and to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) for granting us access to the data. CUDLI will be freely available online in Fall 2021.
