Creating Data-Driven Pedagogical Materials Using Learner Corpora: A Guide for Language Teachers
Speaker: Dr. Elnaz Kia
Location: Online (via Zoom)
Length: 45-minute session + 15-min Q&A
Date: Thursday, May 6th, 2021, 3:00 – 4:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)
Sponsored by: L2TReC, University of Utah
The purpose of this webinar is to help language teachers use learner corpora (i.e., large collections of texts containing language data produced by L2 learners) to create authentic materials. The webinar will start with a brief introduction to corpus linguistics and the pedagogical implications of learner corpora. Next, scaffolded instructions will be provided to run basic corpus linguistic functions in AntConc (i.e., A free corpus linguistic toolkit; Anthony, 2020) using sample learner data. Finally, the presenter will demonstrate how to interpret the corpus search results and use the findings to develop data-driven activities. While the learner corpus examples in this webinar will be specifically from three languages (English, French, and Spanish), the tools and techniques introduced are applicable to all languages.
To prepare for the webinar:
1. Download and install the latest version of AntConc.
2. If you are new to corpus linguistics or would like a refresher, you could watch our previous introductory webinar (after registration) here.
Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance per request. Utah DLI instructors who attend the webinar could add the webinar hours to their professional development hours.
