Creating Pedagogical Materials Using Learner Corpora

The primary purpose of this webinar is to familiarize language teachers with learner corpora, which refer to sizable compilations of texts that encompass language data produced by L2 learners. Learner corpora serve as valuable resources for creating authentic pedagogical materials. The webinar will delve into the following areas of discussion: 

  1. Basic concepts in corpus linguistics
    1. A definition of corpora and corpus linguistics
    2. Basic tools and techniques in corpus linguistics
  2. Pedagogical applications of corpora, esp. learner corpora
    1. Direct vs. Indirect applications
    2. Learner corpora and their affordances in the language classroom
    3. Sample corpus-informed teaching materials
  3. Development of data-driven activities
    1. Basic principles of designing effective and engaging teaching materials
    2. Step-by-step process of creating corpus-informed materials using a real example
