Overview

The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview, or OPI, is a live 30 to 45-minute telephonic conversation between a trained, certified ACTFL tester and the candidate. The OPIc is an Internet-delivered test which provides valid and reliable oral proficiency testing on a large scale. It was developed in response to the increased worldwide demand for the testing of oral language proficiency. The computer delivered assessment emulates the “live” OPI, but delivery of questions is through a carefully designed computer program, and via a virtual avatar. Thus the test can be taken on demand, and at at a time convenient to the candidate and proctor. These tests are available to the university community and the public, but they must be taken at the University of Utah campus.

Testing Procedures

If you would like L2TReC to proctor either an OPI ($139) or an OPIc ($70), Click here for a list of available languages. Please fill out and submit the Google form below or here. FLAS students click here for test registration.  We kindly ask that you give us two 3-hour blocks to reserve the OPI test and provide dates 2 weeks out from the date of the request. OPIc tests require notice of 1-3 business days.

Please note that some organizations or schools may require you to take an OPI and may not accept the OPIc. Please make sure to check before choosing your test.

You will receive an auto email confirmation within 5 minutes after you submit the Google Form. If you don't see it in your inbox, please email L2TReC.  You will receive a final test date confirmation via outlook appointment calendar generally within 5 days. You must accept and confirm your date no later than 2 days prior to your test or it will be cancelled. Please be sure to show up 5 minutes before your testing time. If you fail to appear for your test, you or your department will be charged for this testing service.

Please allow 3-5 business days to process your appointment. Tests are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  We are closed on weekends and federal and school holidays.
