Using a Learner Corpus to Create Pedagogical Materials for Language Classrooms

The objective of this workshop is to equip language educators with the skills needed to develop data-driven teaching activities using either learner corpora or writing samples generated by their own students. Workshop participants will learn about pedagogical applications of corpus linguistics in the language classroom and practice the necessary skills to create their own data-driven teaching materials.

Creating Corpus-Informed Materials for the Dual Language Immersion Classroom

Speaker:  Dr. Elnaz Kia & Dr. Valeria Sky (Bogorevich)
Date: July 13–14, 2023

This workshop aimed to prepare current and future Dual Language Immersion (DLI) teachers to create authentic teaching materials for DLI classrooms using learner corpora (i.e., large collections of texts containing language data produced by L2 learners). The two-day in-person workshop included lectures and hands-on practice sessions on the following topics:

  • Analyzing sample corpus-informed teaching materials in various languages
  • Using corpus linguistic tools and techniques
  • Developing corpus-informed activities based on corpus search results
