Preparing Students for a Global Workforce—Through Language

At the University of Utah, world languages are more than just a requirement—they're a powerful tool for professional success. Just ask French Professor Anne Lair, who is on a mission to connect students with global opportunities through language and culture.

Born in France’s Loire Valley and now directing both the French Basic Language Program and the French Bridge Program at the U, Lair blends academic excellence with real-world impact. Her goal? To show students how language skills can open doors in international business, healthcare, diplomacy, and beyond.

Lair’s efforts go far beyond the classroom. As Honorary Consul to France, she has created internship pathways for U students in business and sports industries abroad—offering hands-on experience in global settings. Her course, Business French, equips students with the cultural fluency needed to thrive in international workplaces.

“Language is for diplomacy. Language is for work,” Lair says. And her students are living proof.
