Chinese Teacher Workshop

June 25-28 | LNCO 2110 | 9am - 4pm

"Exploring China: Past, Present, and YOU" Faculty: Shin Chi Fame Kao (University of Utah), Dori Huang (Weber State University), Dr. Ko-yin Sung (Utah State University), and Dr. Alex Yuan (Utah Valley University)

The Summer Teacher Workshops are university content workshops, taught in the target language, for all K-12 language teachers and Bridge Program instructors. 

Workshops are designed for adults to engage in deeper cultural learning and in language practice. Topics and texts are based on the upcoming year’s 3000 level DLI/University Bridge Courses. Participants will read, analyze, and discuss various texts, film and artistic expression, and discuss ways to help students access and analyze ideas presented through these sources. Participants will explores ways to connect their students to cultural and community projects.

French Teacher Workshop

July 29 - August 1 | LNCO 1945 |

Faculty: Dr. Anne Lair (University of Utah) and Mr. Julien Naudot.

The Summer Teacher Workshops are university content workshops, taught in the target language, for all K-12 language teachers. Workshops are designed for adults to engage in deeper cultural learning and in language practice.

Prof. Anne Lair (University of Utah) will present on oral and written proficiency, leading to Intercultural Communication. Mr. Julien Naudot (Canyons School District) will share with participants his work at the Elementary level.

Participants will 1) work on proficiency based on their grade level, 2) learn to use the ACTFL/NCSSFL Intercultural Communication Guidelines, in order to enhance culture in their classroom. Towards the end of the week, participants will develop tasks (Presentational Speaking and Presentational Writing) targeting their students' grade levels and the proficiency benchmarks.

Spanish Teacher Workshop

Summer workshops are university content workshops, taught in the target language, for all K-12 language teachers. Workshops are designed for adults to engage in deeper cultural learning and in language practice.

Literary analysis in the globalized world explores the tools and strategies for analysis of essay and narrative. Each day will tackle a different genre, and include exemplary writings by South American canonical authors like Julio Cortázar  and Indigenous Nobel Peace Prize essayist Rigoberta Menchú. Participants will also develop ideas specific to the integration of this material into their instruction for K-12 students.

Este taller de 2 días tiene como objetivo principal introducir a los alumnos al campo lingüístico de Lenguas en Contacto. Se presentarán los conceptos básicos, teorías, y metodologías diferentes del campo con énfasis en los estudios de lenguas en contacto con español. En este curso vamos a estudiar la manera en que se forman nuevas lenguas a través del contacto entre hablantes de dos o más comunidades lingüísticas. El curso ofrece las herramientas metodológicas básicas para que puedan interpretar de manera crítica artículos especializados en la disciplina. La evaluación del curso incluye presentaciones estudiantiles en clase, discusiones, tareas de comprensión lectora y trabajos en clase. Curso se presentará en español.
