Speaker: Dr. Elnaz Kia, Postdoctoral Research Associate, L2TReC
Date: Wednesday, March 5, 2021
Length: 90-minute session + 30-min Q&A
This webinar serves as an introduction to corpus linguistics as a valuable tool for language instruction. Corpus linguistics involves the use of computer-based tools to efficiently analyze large collections of authentic spoken and written texts in an efficient way. The pedagogical applications of corpora encompass a wide range of possibilities, including but not limited to: 1. informing curricula, 2. designing syllabi, 3. informing textbooks, 4. creating teaching materials, and 5. developing tests. The primary focus of this session is to explore the use of fundamental corpus linguistic tools for the purpose of designing authentic classroom activities. The tools and techniques introduced in this webinar can be applied to any language. By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- learn about valuable pedagogical applications of corpora.
- evaluate your intuitions about actual language use across different registers (e.g., academic language, informal conversation).
- employ basic corpus linguistic tools to inform your instruction and develop authentic teaching materials.
- enhance your teaching toolkit by incorporating freely available online foreign language corpora.
