2021 Corpus Webinar II on Creating Pedagogical Materials
Title: Creating Data-Driven Pedagogical Materials Using Learner Corpora: A Guide for Language Teachers
Speaker: Dr. Elnaz Kia, Postdoctoral Research Associate, L2TReC
Date: Thursday, May 6, 2021
Length: 45-minute session + 15-min Q&A
The purpose of this webinar is to introduce language teachers to learner corpora (i.e., large collections of texts containing language data produced by L2 learners) as a source to create authentic pedagogical materials. The webinar includes three sections: 1) An introduction to corpus linguistics: This section discusses the definition and importance of corpora and corpus linguistics; 2) Pedagogical applications of learner corpora: In this section, the presenter defines learner corpora and introduces several freely-available multilingual spoken and written learner corpora; 3) Development of data-driven activities: This section involves various examples of data-driven activities and research studies based on learner corpora. The presenter showcases real-life language learning challenges and explains how the challenges could be addressed by running basic corpus-linguistic analyses on learner corpora and using the corpus search results to create authentic materials.
This webinar was supported by LRC funds awarded for the 2018-2022 cycle.
