Workshops for K12 Teachers

Isabel Dulfano, PhD (Professor of Spanish, University of Utah) will teach the first two days on literary analysis of essays written in various contemporary and classical formats. We review the methodology of literary analysis of essays in general in order to apply it to popular written forms of persuasion. Reading texts which discuss national identity, individual representations of self, and familiar social controversies of the past and present, we will examine the inner workings of these persuasive narratives. From that point of departure, teachers can develop strategies for students to emulate the various styles and techniques exemplified in the readings that best scaffold their ideas.

Maria Luisa Spicer-Escalante, PhD (Professor of Spanish and Linguistics, Utah State University) will teach July 28-29 and address Lesson Planning: Moving from Teacher-Centered to Learner-Centered Classroom.

Initial Teaching Philosophy
Focus on the Can Do Statements (CDS) with communicative tasks with a specific purpose
The teaching of grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading, speaking for communicative purposes
Self-Assessment of Teaching Statement (SATS) (teachers can bring a video of themselves to be analyzed)
Final Teaching Philosophy
The final product of the 2-day session: A polished teaching philosophy, a lessson plan based on the CDS and a clear idea on how to do their SATS
